Orange Chicken

Better then the take out version!

This recipe is made with all fresh ingredients and is sure to become a staple on the menu. Serve this up with your choice of steamed or fried rice and veggies.

Ingredients

Marinade

  • 1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 garlic cloves finely diced
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1/4 tsp freshly ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli flakes

Chicken

  • 650grams boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 2.5cm pieces or bite size
  • 1/3 cup cornstarch
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup vegetable oil

Garnish

  • 1/2 tsp sesame seeds
  • 1 spring onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp orange zest

Instructions

Marinade

  1. In a small bowl mix water and corn starch together set aside
  2. In a saucepan add all marinade ingredients except for water and corn starch cook for 3-4 minutes or until fragrant.
  3. Add the water and corn starch and cook for a further 5 minutes until it becomes a thick sauce like consistency.
  4. Remove from heat and set aside.

Chicken

  1. On a shallow tray combine the flour, cornstarch and salt.
  2. In a shallow dish add eggs and whisk.
  3. Toss the chicken in the egg mixture and transfer to the flour mixture(make sure to wait for excess egg to drip off before transferring)
  4. Toss the chicken in flour mixture until fully coated and put aside on a plate.
  5. In a pan add the oil and once it becomes hot cook the chicken until it becomes golden brown about 2-3 minutes. You may need to do batches so there is space in the pan. (Add more oil if needed)
  6. Once chicken is cooked add in the marinade, sesame seeds, orange zest and spring onion.
  7. Serve with steamed rice and your choice of veggies.
  8. Enjoy!
